AFIS - Mnemonic for Automated Fingerprint Identification System. AFIS was originally a term applied exclusively to CRIMINAL JUSTICE Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems ( CJ AFIS ). AFIS is currently used much more broadly to cover most fingerprint identification systems, inclusive of civil identification (CID) AFIS as well as criminal justice AFIS systems.
